Why Every Story Begins with a Question

Every story begins somewhere. Sometimes it’s a single moment. Sometimes it’s a memory. For me, it almost always begins with a question that refuses to leave me alone.
Reflection
People often ask writers where their ideas come from. It’s a fair question, but I’ve never found an easy answer.
Ideas don’t usually arrive as complete stories. They don’t knock politely on the door with a beginning, middle, and ending already planned. More often, they arrive quietly, disguised as a simple question that lingers longer than it should.
What if…?
Those two words have started more journeys than I can count. Sometimes the question is small. What if two unlikely friends could make learning the alphabet an adventure?
Other times, it grows into something much larger. What if the parts of ourselves we hide are the very things that make us who we are?
I don’t sit down to write because I already know the answers. I write because I’m curious enough to go looking for them.
Following the Question
I’ve discovered that stories have a way of changing while they’re being written. Characters surprise me. Conversations take unexpected turns. Entire worlds appear from ideas that seemed insignificant when they first arrived.
If I tried to control every detail from the beginning, I think I’d lose the sense of discovery that makes writing so rewarding. Instead, I’ve learned to trust the question. It usually knows where it’s going long before I do.
More Than Entertainment
I hope my stories are enjoyable. I hope they make people laugh, wonder, and occasionally stay up a little too late reading “just one more chapter.”
But more than anything, I hope they leave readers with a question of their own. The best stories don’t simply entertain us. They stay with us.
They invite us to see the world a little differently than we did before we opened the book. If one of my stories encourages someone to wonder, imagine, or hope a little more deeply, then I think it’s done exactly what it was meant to do.
Why I’m Sharing This
This journal isn’t going to be filled with writing advice. There are already plenty of places for that. Instead, I want this to be a place where I can share the thoughts, discoveries, challenges, and quiet moments that happen between one book and the next.
Some entries will be about worldbuilding. Some will be about publishing. Some may simply be reflections on life, creativity, or the stories that have shaped me. But they all begin in the same place—with curiosity.
Final Thoughts
Every adventure begins with a first step. Every conversation begins with a first word. And every story begins with a question worth asking.
